Massimiliano Gagliardo was born in Savona and made his debut at a very young age at the Sapalato Opera as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor. He has then starter a brilliant career which brought him quickly to perform at: Teatro Regio in Parma, La Scala in Milan (Armide and Don Giovanni conducted by Riccardo Muti, Adriana Lecouvreur, Mussorgskij’s Matrimonio), Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Teatro Comunale in Florence and Bologna (Donizetti’s Dom Sebastien conducted by Daniele Gatti, the world premiere of Cantata della Vita composed and conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti), Rome Opera (Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur conducted by Daniel Oren, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Silvio in I pagliacci, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Marcello in La Bohème, Boniface in Massenet’s Le jongleur de Notre Dame, the world premiere of Respighi’s Marie Victoire, Il Barbiere di Sivglia, Così fan tutte, all conducted by Gelmetti), Teatro Bellini in Catania (I Puritani for Bellini’s bicentenary), Teatro La Maestranza in Seville, Thèâtre des Champs Elysèes in Paris (Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Opèra de Montecarlo (Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali), Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile (Michonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur), Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan and NHK. He ha also been a guest of important Festivals such as Pesaro’s Rossini Opera Festival (Azio Corghi’s Isabella), the Wexford Festival Opera (Dargomyzkij’s Russalka and Massenet’s Sapho) and of prestigious concert halls such as the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (the european premiere of Luis Bacalov’s Misa Tango conducted by Chung and Podkolessin in Mussorgskij’s Matrimonio), Wien’s Konzerthaus (Martin y Soler’s Una cosa rara) and Amsterdam’s Konzertgebouw (Gianni Schicchi conducted by Riccardo Chailly).
He has been conducted by such important conductors as: Richard Bonynge, Riccardo Chailly, Myung-Whun Chung, Daniele Gatti, Gianiuigi Gelmetti, Riccardo Muti, Jordi Savall, Claudio Scimone, and has been directed by important directors such as Pier Luigi Pizzi, Giorgio Strehler and Franco Zeffirelli.
He has already held important vocal concerts (at the Teatro Regio in Parma, at La Scala and at the Comunale in Bologna), and has performed Schumann’s Liederkreis for the chamber season of the Teatro Comunale in Modena. His symphonic repertoire also includes Beethoven’s IX Symphony, Donizetti’s Messa da Requiem, Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria.
His wide repertoire includes also the roles of Dandini in Cenerentola, Cavalier Belfiore in Verdi’s Finto Stanislao, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, De Sirieux in Fedora, Belcore in Elisir d'amore, Bruschino Padre in Signor Bruschino. At the Teatro Rossini in Lugo di Romagna he has sang in the two French one act operas: Darius Milhaud’s Le pauvre Matelot and Emmanuel Chabrier’s Une èducation manquèe, while at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste he was Harlekin in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Recently he has obtained considerable critical and public’s acclaim at the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi, who has invited him to perform the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi.
Among his recordings: Don Giovanni for Kikko Classic, Persiani’s Ines de Castro (Bongiovanni), Massenet’s Sapho (Fonè), Rossini’s Il turco in Italia (Naxos), a dvd of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi recorded for the Christmas Concert at the Amsterdam Konzertgebouw under Riccardo Chailly.
His recent engagements include: Gianni Schicchi and La Bohéme at Teatro Comunale in Florence, Busoni’s Arlecchino in Bologna and Wexford, Iris in Livorno, Modena and in Lucca, La Bohéme (Marcello) at the Teatro Verdi in Salerno, Così fan tutte and La fanciulla del West in Rome, Le Comte Ory at Greek National Opera in Athens.
His future engagements include: Il Barbiere di Siviglia under Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Rome Opera, La Bohème in Stresa and at the Lingotto in Turin under Gianandrea Noseda as well as for Teatro Regio in Turin, Pelleas et Melisande at the Rome Opera, I Pagliacci in Livorno.
