Irish soprano Majella Cullagh trained with Maeve Coughlan at the Cork School of Music, and at the National Opera Studio London. She now studies with Gerald Martin Moore.
Her repertoire includes the roles of: Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore (Royal Danish Opera and Opera Ireland); Comtesse Adèle in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory (Glyndebourne Touring Opera); Dorella in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot (Wexford Festival); Elsie Maynard in The Yeoman of the Guard (Welsh National Opera), Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte (Las Palmas), Massenet’s Manon (New Zealand Opera), Micaela in Carmen, Contessa in Nozze di Figaro, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Berenice in L’Occasione fa il ladro and Ghita in Der Zwerg (Opera North), Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (Regensburg), Tatjana in Evgenij Onegin (Grange Park Opera), Melissa in Händel’s Amadigi (Covent Garden Festival, Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, Lisbon and Oporto with Opera Theatre Company), Gavin Bryar’s Medea (English premiere for BBC Scotland), Norina in Don Pasquale (Garsington Opera), Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Violetta in La Traviata and Musetta in La Bohème (Glyndebourne).
Miss Cullagh performs extensively in oratorio, and on the concert platform throughout the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and the United States, and she can be heard regularly on RTE and BBC broadcasts. She has sung Huit scènes de Faust in Venice at La Fenice conducted by Jeffrey Tate, and sang Les Soirées Italiennes at the Covent Garden Festival, Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Barbican Centre with the BBC. She has made complete recordings of the title role in Wallace’s Maritana and Mendelssohn’s Second Symphony on the Naxos label, the title roles in Mercadante’s Zaira and Donizetti’s Zoraida di Granata for the Opera Rara label, for which she also recorded Rossini’s Bianca e Falliero, Adelaide di Borgogna and Matilde in Elisabetta, Regina d’Inghilterra with Jennifer Larmore (also performed in London for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee), Mozart, The supreme decorator with Hannover Band conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, Donizetti’s Pia de’ Tolomei and Diluvio universale, as well as three volumes of songs, duets, trios and ensembles, accompanied by piano in the Il Salotto series.
Among her recent engagements: The Death of Klinghoffer and Rossini’s La Morte di Didone and Stabat Mater as well as Donizetti’s Poliuto at the Amsterdam Konzertgebouw, Norina in Don Pasquale, Arminda in La finta giardiniera and Ninetta in La Gazza Ladra at Garsington Opera (also recorded by Chandos), the title role in Donizetti's Pia de' Tolomei at the Royal Festival Hall in London and in a recording for Opera Rara, the title role in Rossini’s Adelaide di Borgogna at the Edinburgh International Festival (recorded live by Opera Rara), Donizetti’s Il Diluvio universale at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, following the studio recording of the opera for Opera Rara and for the St. Galler Festspiele, Musetta in La Bohème at the Royal Albert Hall in London directed by Francesca Zambello, the title role in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in Dallas, Stockholm, Grange Park Opera and at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus for Glyndebourne, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and Balfe’s Falstaff (recorded on cd) for Opera Ireland, Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Opéra de Toulon conducted by Giuliano Carella, her debut as Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux for Opera Holland Park conducted by Richard Bonynge, Donizetti’s Linda di Chamounix at Teatro Sociale in Bergamo for Donizetti Festival 2009, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with Orchestra Verdi in Milan and at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Handel's Messiah at the Royal Albert Hall in London, in Rome, Cork and Dublin, Verdi's Alzira at Theater St. Gallen, Rossini’s Le siege de Corinthe at the Rossini in Wildbad Festival, a Recital at the 2010 Rossini Opera Festival.
Among her future engagements: Linda di Chamounix (Linda) at the Opéra de Toulon, Don Pasquale (Norina) at Opera Holland Park in London conducted by Richard Bonynge, Verdi’s Alzira and Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Theater St. Gallen, a concert Hommage to Giuditta Pasta in Stuttgart.
