Lucia Mazzaria was born in Gorizia and studied music and singing first with her parents and then with C. Strudthoff e H. Lawson. At a very young age she won the 2nd prize at the II International Competition in Rio de Janeiro and the 1st prize at “Concorso Puccini” in Lucca. Her professional debut is in Trieste in 1986 with Fauré’s Requiem, followed by her first recording, Pergolesi’s Adriano in Siria, published by Bongiovanni. In 1987 she makes her debut as Mimì in La Bohème at La Fenice in Venice, replacing Renata Scotto, hailed by the critic’s as Mirella Freni’s heir.
This is the start of an international career which sees her appearing in: Rio de Janeiro (debut as Micaela in Carmen), Hamburg, Chicago, Minneapolis (La Bohème), Sao Paulo (Falstaff), Houston, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Tel Aviv, Wien, Zurich (Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello), Dusseldorf, Bratislava, Koblenz, Wiesbaden, Koln (Amelia in Simon Boccanegra), Stuttgart (Margherita in Mefistofele), Strasbourg, Reikyiavik, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Oviedo, Bilbao (Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni), Mulhouse, Bonn, Mannheim, Montecarlo, Bologna, Verona, Genova, Rome, Ravenna, Ferrara, Parma, Naples (Marguerite in Faust), Macerata, La Scala (Gianni Schicchi, La Bohème, Turandot, La Traviata, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Orfeo ed Euridice), London (Liù in Turandot), Munich.
She has worked, among others, with such distinguished conductors as: Riccardo Muti, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Georges Pretre, Riccardo Chailly, Christian Thielemann, Bruno Bartoletti, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Roberto Abbado, and has been directed by such prestigious names as: Franco Zeffirelli, Andrei Serban, Liliana Cavani, Gilbert Deflo, Giancarlo Del Monaco, Bruno De Simone, Hugo De Ana.
On the concert platform she sings Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at NHK conducted by M° Gelmetti, televised in Japan and America, who also invites her for the same piece in Stuttgart and for Rossini’s Stabat Mater in Genova. Again in the Verdi's Requiem she appears in Valencia, Rome and Norway. Recently she sang in Lisbon Berg’s Sieben Fruhe Lieder and Hindemith’s Drei Gesange.
In 2003 she starts exploring dramatic soprano repertoire, singing Abigaille in Nabucco in Jesi and Fermo, followed by her appearence in the same role in Athens at Herodes Atticus and at the Canary Islands.
In 2004 she sings her first Puccini’s Turandot (this time in the title role) in Lisbon, conducted by M° Pesko and directed by Serban. She then repeats the role of Turandot in Catania, Rome, Kawasaki and at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
In 2005 she sings her first Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana at the Rome Opera and in 2006 her first Ponchielli’s La Gioconda at Teatro Bellini in Catania, recently relased on dvd.
Her recordings include: Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle for Hansller Classic, Puccini’s Turandot on dvd for Arthaus, Leoncavallo’s La Bohéme for Nuova Era.
