Luca Grassi

          Born in the San Marino Republic and trained as an engineer, Luca Grassi started his music studies in Bologna with Paride Venturi. He is now under the guidance of Carlo Meliciani.
          In 1998, he won in the Città di Roma competition where he made his debut as Germont in La Traviata. In the same year he performed, in Czech, the title role in Šarlatán by P.Haas at the Wexford Festival Opera 1998.
          Grassi has been a regular guest of the Martina Franca Festival, where he has performed the title role in Roland (N. Piccinni), Soliman in La Reine de Saba (C. Gounod), Le Comte de Saint-Bris in Les Huguenots, the title role in Werther (J.Massenet - baritone version), Sèvere in Polyeucte (C.Gounod).
          Notable productions have been La Bohème (Marcello) at the Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Modena, Piacenza, Cagliari and at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. I Pagliacci (Silvio) and Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) under the baton of Daniele Gatti at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. I Puritani (Sir Riccardo Forth) at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste. Aida (Amonasro) at the Teatro Sociale di Rovigo, Pisa, Trento. Stiffelio (Stankar) al Teatro Verdi di Trieste.
          He performed Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at the Scottish Opera-Glasgow, at the Deutsche Oper of Berlin, at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. Don Giovanni (title role) at the Opera Giocosa di Savona, Le Marquis de la Force in Les dialogues des Carmélites at the Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, Frederick in Lakmé at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo.
          In the 2004/05 season, he won resounding applause with his role debut as Zurga in Les pêcheurs de perles by Bizet at the Teatro Malibran, a production conducted by Marcello Viotti, and in the Japan tour of the Gran Teatro la Fenice di Venezia.
          More recently he took part to the reopening of the Gran Teatro la Fenice di Venezia singing La traviata (Germont), conducted by Lorin Maazel. And he performed the role of Cristiano in I Cavalieri di Ekebù (R.Zandonai) at the Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Falstaff (Ford) at the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Aida (Amonasro) at the Teatro Regio di Torino.
          During the last season he debuted the roles as Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opera Hong Kong, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro Donizetti di Bergamo, in St. Gallen and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin conducted by Renato Palumbo, as well as Escamillo in Carmen at the Opera Giocosa di Savona with Fondazione Toscanini, Giovanna d’Arco in St. Gallen and Israele in Donizetti’s Marino Faliero in Bergamo and Sassari (to be released on dvd by Dynamic).
          His future engagements include: Verdi's La Traviata (Germont) and Alzira (Gusmano) in St. Gallen, Massenet’s Hérodiade (Hérode) in Bucharest, La Traviata in Leipzig, Macbeth at Maggio Musicale in Florence conducted by Nicola Luisotti, Falstaff at the Opéra de Toulon conducted by Giuliano Carella, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Dallas Opera.
