Annie Vavrille

          Annie Vavrille made her musical studies at the Lyon Conservatory, and obtained a Musicology degree in the same city. She then continues her vocal studies with Ileana Cotrubas, Galina Vichnevskaya and Gabriella Ravazzi, decisive figures in her vocal training. She made her debut at La Fenice in Venice in Ravel’s Enfant et les Sortilèges and at the Welsh National Opera.

          In 1996 she sings the Princesse in Dargominsky’s Rusalka at the Wexford Festival, highly praised by the British press. In Austria, at the Gars am Kamp Festival, she makes her debut as Bizet’s Carmen, revived at the Perelada Festival with Alagna and Gheorghiu in the Calixto Bieito production (1999 Spanish Critics’ Prize), with Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp and Gent in 2004, as well as on a tour with Opera Zuid in Maastricht, allowing her to be quoted by the press as “one of the best Carmen in the decade”. She sang Concepcion in Ravel’s Heure Espagnole in Maastricht, Geneviève in Pelleas et Mélisande at La Maestranza in Seville and in 2004 made her debut in Samson et Dalila, conducted by Patrick Fournillier at the French Festival in Hong-Kong, where she returns in 2006  for Carmen.

          She is regularly invited in Italian houses: Genova, Florence, Modena, Parma, Reggio Emilia (Lucretia in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia, directed by Daniele Abbado), Bologna (Fabio Vacchi’s Gli Uccelli di passaggio and La fille du regiment with Juan Diego Florez, directed by Emilio Sagi), Palermo (Lakmé), Torino (Jérome Savary’s Carmen II), Scala di Milano (Alberto Colla’s Il processo). As Carmen she performed in Taormina and in Mantova for Fondazione Toscanini.

          She is a regular guest at the Opéra de Nice: Les Contes d’Hoffmann (directed by G. del Monaco), Don Quichotte, Bartok’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle (conductor M. Guidarini), Honneger’s Les Aventures du roi Pausole and La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein. She ha salso sung at the Festival de Radio France in Montpellier (Bloch’s Macbeth), in Nancy (Hersant’s Le château des Carpathes), Tourcoing (Catone in Utica), Nîmes (Nabucco), Festival de Domaine Renoir (Carmen), and recently sung her first Ulrica in Ballo in Maschera, conducted by G. Carella in Toulon. In 2006 she sings in the world premiere of Ambrosini’s Il canto della pelle at the Opéra de Lyon.

          Annie Vavrille has appeared on the concert platform with some of Europe’s most important orchestras: Antwerp Philharmonic (Shéhérazade), la Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, Santa Cecilia in Rome, BBC Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall (L’Enfant et les Sortilèges with Sir Andrew Davis), Orchestre National de Lyon, , Orquestre National de Montpellier, Haydn Orchestra in Bolzano (Verdi’s Requiem), Orquestre Regional de Cannes (Berlioz/Nuits d’été), Orquestre Philarmonique de Nice at the Ravello International Festival, Orquestre Philharmonique de Radio-France.

          She is also very active in the contemporary music repertoire: Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and Boulez’s Le Marteau sans maître with soloists from Orquestre National de Lyon, Berio (Folk-Songs) with Ensemble Inter-Contemporain, and she took part in world premieres in Nancy (Zulueta’s Un tango pour Mr. Lautrec) and Lyon (Jaffrenou’s L’oracle de voyage).

          Her recordings include: Bloch’s Macbeth, conducted by Friedemann Layer with Orquestre Philharmonique de Montpellier; Testi’s Saul with Orquestre Philharmonique de Radio-France; Andrea Chénier on DVD from Comunale di  Bologna, conducted by Carlo Rizzi with Cura and Guleghina.

          Among her recent engagements: Andrea Chénier in Bologna, Don Quichotte in Trieste, her debut at San Carlo in Naples with the world premiere of Panni’s Garibaldi in Sicilia, La fille du régiment in Savonlinna and in Japan, Ravel’s Shéhérazade and Adriana Lecouvreur in Messina conducted by M° Maurizio Arena, Les contes d’Hoffmann directed by Lindsay Kemp in Santander, San Sebastian, Cordoba and Perelada, Les dialogues des Carmelites at the Vlaamse Opera, The Rake’s progress in Stresa under Gianandrea Noseda, Maddalena in Rigoletto at the Opéra de Toulon conducted by Giuliano Carella, Werther in Hong Kong.

          Among her future engagements: Faust under Lorin Maazel in Valencia, La fille du regiment with Juan Diego Florez in Bilbao, Le Grand Macabre at the Rome Opera, Shéhérazade in Oviedo.
